My Twin Flame Story
If I could tell him one thing now, it would be: I love you, unconditionally, now and forever. I would kiss him on his forehead, because it meant something special to him, and let him kiss mine.
I used to think "twin flame" was spiritual nonsense, something people said to justify toxic relationships or their own delusions. Then I met him. This is the story, told honestly, and what it taught me about twin flames, soulmates and karmic partners.
The night I almost didn't go
Two years ago I was lonelier than I had been in a long time. I had plans to meet someone that night, and he cancelled. So I was on a dating app, scrolling. A man with a beard as his profile picture messaged me and asked me to come over. I never replied to people without a face picture. That night, I did.
I half expected him not to be real. Later he told me he had thought the same about me. When I got to his hotel and we saw each other for the first time, the first thing I felt was relief. Huge relief. As if we had been waiting our whole lives to meet, or to meet again.
We shared a cigarette, both trying not to blush. The night went the way we had planned it. But then he asked me to stay. He bought me dinner. We held each other all night. One night became three days of closeness, love and something I can only call healing.
When he had to leave for work, I cried. He told me I had healed him a lot.
Everything changed, and I made him the centre
After that first day I deleted every dating app. I just knew this was how I wanted to spend my life. I stopped drinking. I stopped hooking up, stopped the adult content I was making online, stopped smoking weed and cigarettes. I became vegetarian because he was. I told myself I was becoming the best version of myself. Really, I was becoming the best version of myself for him.
We were long distance and we called every day. Slowly, the calls thinned out. And I fell apart. I couldn't function unless he texted or called. It became a longing that took over everything.
So I decided to leave my business behind and move to Germany to be with him. The strange thing is that his life seemed to mirror my decision before I had even told him. Around the same time, he lost both of his jobs.
The day I landed in Germany, he broke up with me.
Where the real journey started
"The wound is the place where the light enters you."
Often attributed to Rumi
I was shattered. And that is where my real journey of self-realisation began.
I only went through that journey because, when I was with him, my identity, my happiness, everything had become dependent on him. When all of that was taken away in the space of a second, I was lost and broken. Only then did I find the light within me.
He had been in the closet. He needed to fit in, and I was a secret. To be fair to him, from the very first day he kept telling me, "I'm going to end up breaking your heart." I always believed that was because he didn't feel worthy of love. Maybe it was. It was also the truth.
What I finally saw was this: I had never stopped depending on something outside me to feel whole. Before him it was my career, my addictions, sex. When I met him, all of that became one thing: "I can find all my fulfilment in him." I hadn't changed the pattern. I had just given it one face.
Which wounds did the connection bring up? Honestly, every single one. That, more than anything, is what makes me call it a twin flame.
The signs I can't explain
The connection between us was intense in ways I still can't fully explain. We dreamt of each other. We could feel each other deeply from far away. Sometimes I would wake from sleep a moment before he texted me.
After the breakup, I saw us everywhere. His favourite number, 2434, kept appearing wherever I looked.
And there was the pattern people call runner and chaser. The more I pushed, the more he pulled away.
Six months later
When I went back to Germany six months later, he texted me and we met. He let me stay with him for a week. On the first night we slept together, and it felt empty. He wasn't really there with me. All week he found reasons not to be home, not to spend time with me. He didn't want me to touch him when he slept.
On my last day, before he came home, something in me finally settled. I accepted that I could not force him to love me as much as I loved him.
That night he came home early to spend time with me. The moment he saw me, he started crying. And for the first time that week, he let me hold him.
I don't think that was a coincidence. The moment I stopped grasping, the space between us softened.
What people get wrong about twin flames
The biggest myth is that a twin flame connection always ends in reunion. It doesn't have to. Of course, deep in my heart, I still hope that one day we find each other again and build something beautiful. But it is not something I depend on any more.
What I learned is that the healing has to be for me, not to become the "healed version" that wins him back. And healing turned out not to mean adding good habits or removing bad ones, or swapping one identity for a better one. It meant being free of identities altogether. Being present. Living now, because the past and the future don't exist anywhere except in the mind.
True completeness was never in him. It has always existed within me.
Twin flame, soulmate or karmic partner?
This is from my own experience and from readings, not a fixed rule.
- Soulmate. A balance. Soulmates rarely trigger you. Being with them feels steady, like coming home.
- Karmic partner. A repeat. The same old pattern in a new face, often driven by lust or need, until you finally see it.
- Twin flame. A mirror. It brings up everything at once, and even the earliest moments carry deep healing. For me even the intimacy felt high, not lustful. Then it shows you exactly where you are still looking outside yourself for wholeness.
A word of honesty: the term "twin flame" is modern. It became popular in New Age teaching from the 1970s, though Plato's Symposium has an older myth of souls split in two and searching for their other half. Whatever you call it, the question that matters is the same: what is this connection showing you about yourself?
And please: intensity is not proof of something sacred. If a relationship involves control, abuse or makes you feel unsafe, don't explain it away as a spiritual connection.
If you are waiting for them to come back
I won't pretend this part is easy. The truth is that the work has to be done for yourself. If it comes back to reunion, it does. If it doesn't, it doesn't. When you are in the middle of the pain, that can feel impossible to accept. I know. I've been there, and some days I still am.
Start smaller. Notice the moments you check your phone for them. Each one is a place where you are looking outside yourself to feel whole. You don't have to stop. Just notice. Noticing is where it begins.
If you want to work with what the connection is showing you, I wrote a follow-up on how readings help with exactly that, including a simple exercise: The Twin Flame Mirror.
Frequently asked
What is a twin flame?
In modern spiritual teaching, a twin flame is a person who mirrors you so deeply that the connection brings up everything unhealed in you. The term is modern, popularised in New Age circles from the 1970s, though Plato's Symposium has an older myth of souls split in two. In my experience it is less about finding your other half and more about meeting the part of yourself you have been avoiding.
What is the difference between a twin flame, a soulmate and a karmic partner?
From my own experience and readings: a soulmate feels like balance and rarely triggers you. A karmic partner repeats an old pattern until you see it, and the pull is often driven by lust or need. A twin flame mirrors you, triggers every wound at once, and the connection carries intense healing from the very first moments. These are my observations, not fixed categories.
Do twin flames always reunite?
No. This is the biggest thing people get wrong. Some connections come back together and many do not. The work is the same either way: to realise that completeness was always within you. A reunion can be a gift; it can't be the goal you depend on.
What is the runner and chaser phase?
It is the common pattern where one person pulls away (the runner) and the other pushes harder to hold on (the chaser). In my story, the more I pushed, the more he pulled. The chasing only stopped when I stopped needing him to make me whole.
What are signs of a twin flame?
People often describe instant recognition, a feeling of having waited a lifetime to meet, strong synchronicities such as repeating numbers, shared dreams, and sensing each other at a distance. I experienced all of these. Signs alone don't make a relationship healthy, though.
Is a toxic relationship a twin flame?
Intensity is not proof of a sacred bond. If a relationship involves control, abuse or makes you feel unsafe, please don't explain it away as a spiritual connection. Step back and reach out to people you trust or to a professional.
