Mercury Retrograde Through Vedic Eyes

seen from Earth
Mercury never turns around. From where we stand, it only looks that way for three weeks.

Your phone breaks. A flight is delayed. An ex texts "hey, been thinking about you". Blame Mercury retrograde, says the internet. The Vedic view is different, and a lot more useful.

Mercury retrograde dates

Dates are in US Eastern Time from the Old Farmer's Almanac; in Singapore, a start or end can fall a day later.

What retrograde actually is

Mercury never really turns around. Earth and Mercury circle the Sun at different speeds, and about three times a year, for roughly three weeks, Mercury seems to move backwards against the stars as we watch from Earth. It's the same effect as overtaking a slower car on the highway: for a moment it looks as if it's going backwards.

So retrograde is about perspective, which is fitting for the planet of the mind.

Who Budha is

In Vedic astrology Mercury is Budha, from the root budh, to wake up, to know: the same root as buddhi (intellect) and Buddha. Budha governs speech, writing, trade, learning, nerves and the restless, quick, analytical mind. His day is Wednesday, Budhavāra.

The Vedic view: strong, not broken

Pop astrology treats retrograde as a malfunction. Jyotish doesn't. A retrograde planet is called vakrī, and because it is closest to Earth and brightest at that time, it is traditionally counted as strong: it gains ceṣṭā bala, strength of motion. Its themes don't switch off; they turn up and turn inward.

In my own work I see the grahas as amplifiers, as I wrote in The Navagrahas. They don't put anything in you that wasn't there. They bring up what is already carried. A strong, inward Budha brings up unfinished words: the apology you never made, the thing you never said, the message you drafted and deleted.

That is why the ex comes back. Usually the person is the messenger. The unfinished conversation inside you is the message.

What to do with it

  1. Finish, don't start. The prefix of the season is "re": review, revise, return, repair. Good for editing, not for launching.
  2. Slow your words. Read the message twice before you send it. Many retrograde "disasters" are just fast minds meeting small details.
  3. Ask what is unfinished. When someone from the past appears, ask, "What in me hasn't finished with this?" before you ask, "Should I go back?"
  4. Don't freeze your life. Contracts get signed and phones get bought in every retrograde. Double-check details and carry on.

A Wednesday practice for Budha

The Navagraha Stotram, traditionally attributed to Vyasa, has one verse for each graha. This is the verse for Budha.

Navagraha Stotram · Budha

प्रियङ्गुकलिकाश्यामं रूपेणाप्रतिमं बुधम् ।
सौम्यं सौम्यगुणोपेतं तं बुधं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥

priyaṅgu-kalikā-śyāmaṃ rūpeṇāpratimaṃ budham
saumyaṃ saumya-guṇopetaṃ taṃ budhaṃ praṇamāmy aham

How to say it

priyangu-kalikaa-shyaamam roopenaapratimam budham
saumyam saumya-gunopetam tam budham pranamaamy aham

Word by word
priyaṅgu-kalikā
the bud of the priyangu plant
śyāma
dark (dark green) in hue
rūpeṇa apratima
unequalled in form
budha
Budha, Mercury, the knower
saumya
gentle; also "son of Soma", the Moon
saumya-guṇa-upeta
endowed with gentle qualities
taṃ
to him
praṇamāmi aham
I bow

TranslationDark as the bud of the priyangu, unequalled in form, gentle and full of gentle qualities: to that Budha I bow.

  1. On Wednesday morning, sit quietly and chant the verse three times, or oṃ budhāya namaḥ 108 times.
  2. Then write the one thing you have left unsaid to someone. You don't have to send it.
  3. Read it once, slowly. Notice what you feel. That feeling is what this season is bringing up to be completed.

Frequently asked

When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?

In 2026 Mercury is retrograde from 26 February to 20 March, 29 June to 23 July, and 24 October to 13 November (Eastern Time dates; Singapore can be a day later). In 2027: 9 February to 3 March, 10 June to 4 July, and 7 to 28 October.

What does Mercury retrograde actually mean?

Mercury does not really move backwards. Because Earth and Mercury orbit the Sun at different speeds, for about three weeks, three or four times a year, Mercury appears to move backwards against the stars as seen from Earth.

Is Mercury retrograde bad in Vedic astrology?

Not simply. In Jyotish a retrograde planet (vakri) is closer to Earth, appears brighter, and is traditionally counted as strong (it gains cheshta bala, motional strength). Its themes become more intense and more inward, rather than simply going wrong.

Why do exes come back during Mercury retrograde?

Mercury governs words, messages and the thinking mind. Its retrograde season tends to bring unfinished conversations back into view. That does not mean you should go back. It means something in you may still need to be said, felt or completed.

What should I avoid during Mercury retrograde?

Pop astrology says avoid signing contracts and buying electronics. A more useful approach: slow down, double-check details, and use the season to finish, revise and reflect rather than to rush new beginnings. Normal life still goes on; don't put important decisions on hold out of fear.

What is the mantra for Mercury (Budha)?

A simple one is om budhaya namah, 'salutations to Budha'. Wednesday is Budha's day. The Navagraha Stotram verse for Budha is also given in this article with its meaning.
